Barmy privacy laws hinder Police yet do little for real privacy.
Here in Australia we have privacy laws, some of which have recently been strengthened.
One of my hats being that of Private Investigator has given me some “inside” insights about the effects of these privacy laws.
Generally speaking, privacy laws have done little to improve privacy. The new privacy laws have served to improve things markedly for criminals and others who are a blight on society.
The news article: Criminals change their names by deed poll to evade police is a clear example of bureaucratic and legislative incompetence assisting crime, adversely affecting society and putting Police officers at risk. Many people are not keen on the Police, however we would do well to remember that without them, our quality of life would deteriorate very significantly.
If legislators and politicians were genuinely concerned about privacy, then presumably they would do something about the free, public, anonymous and unrecorded access to the Australian Electoral Roll.
Have a look at this article I wrote about the Australian Electoral Roll:
Free people search in Australia. (AEC method).
As you can see, it is very easy for criminals, stalkers and other busybodies to look up your details. Frankly, the Australian Electoral Roll is an excellent resource for identity theft, other crimes and invasions of privacy.
I find it peculiar that we have as a society such an avid focus on maintaining privacy, yet such a public resource as the Australian Electoral Roll.
