Gatekeepers – and why they are important.
Secretaries, Receptionists, Switchboard Operators, Personal Assistants (PA) and others are all important roles/characters within an organization. Some of these people are what is known as ‘gatekeepers‘ – the people who decide IF you will get to speak with, or meet, the person you would like to interact with.
Often, these ‘gatekeepers’ are regarded with contempt and treated unkindly.
Here are just some of the reasons why you should regard and treat a gatekeeper like a Goddess or God.
- They are human. Basic decency means that you should not demean them, even in your mind.
- You would like to be treated nicely and fairly. Do unto others…..Sowing and reaping…..
- They have the power! To get you in or keep you out. You might be surprised how they could exact their revenge. And you may never know.
- Your reputation – bad news travels fast – very fast. See point 3 again.
- It is good business sense. Look after your staff, or those of your client/prospects/suppliers and you will find that things go better.
- At your funeral, when people say nice things about you it will be the truth. And you will be missed; for all the right reasons.
And for those who want a tip on how to get to speak with someone when the gatekeeper just won’t let you…..
When asked something along the lines of “whom may I say is calling and what is it about“……you say; “it’s very private“. When the gatekeeper insists and tells you that you will not be put through unless you disclose, then say….
“Tell him it’s his sex therapist“.
Just make sure that the gatekeeper and the recipient of your call has a sense of humor! And don’t tell them I sent you.
