Writing better will help your career or business.

writingWriting is one of my passions.

At school English was one of my weaker subjects and being deaf did not help either.

Even today, I could not give you an outline of a basic English grammar lesson without researching it. I never liked Latin or French, which were compulsory and looking back; for me they were indeed a waste of valuable time. Back then I instinctively knew this, though did not have the wisdom to know why. My teachers did not see it that way of course. Poor, misguided chaps. Smile. Learning Latin for example can help some people with English skills and so on, however it is not ideal for everyone. At least I managed to avoid learning Greek and German.

Anyway, back to why writing better will help your career or business….

Writing is a key way in which people communicate.I know that it seems like I am stating the obvious, however let me ask you:

If you agree that communication with other people is important; why haven’t you invested some time into learning how to improve your writing?

Good communication skills will help you influence people, advance your career, sell more, help more people and improve your life in general.

There is another aspect to writing well – one which is not ‘technical’ in outlook; but which is vital. It is important to be able to emotionally affect people. Even badly written text which is highly moving can achieve a far greater result than some perfectly written dry stuff.

Some of the keys to writing emotionally moving copy are:

  • Be authentic – show the real you.
  • Do no worry about what people will think.
  • Allow your inner passion to shine through.
  • Be truthful.
  • Be well researched. Poor research will lead to mistakes which will turn people off.
  • Consider writing what you have to say in the form of a story.
  • Be logical – if you write stuff which does not pass the ‘logic mind gate’ of your readers then you are less likely to affect them positively.
  • Write when you feel the fire.
  • Read widely, especially emotionally moving material.
