Tips to stop your computer slowing you down.

computer_struggleI expect you hate it when your computer runs slow? You know the feelings; frustration, stress, annoyance, loss of concentration, lack of flow — the list goes on, and on. And on!

This post is about two basic things which you can do that will help you solve a number of computer problems, including slowness.

First of all, who am I to be able to comment on this particular subject?

I have extensive experience in productivity improvement due to the nature of my work as a life coach and business consultant. Correct use of technology can be an integral part of this work. Way back in 1981, I started using computers. In those days we had to write programs ourselves. So tedious when I think about it now!

I love computers and computing because of the results I can achieve, and what I can do. I have made it a high-priority to focus on best practice. Although I am not obsessive about the issue, I have an extremely keen awareness of, and focus on, the need to get the most out of every minute of each day.

Solving logical problems is second nature to me and although I did not choose science as a career, I was top of my year for science at school despite competing against some very clever people.

A key step in helping your computer to run faster is to clean it of stuff which is slowing it down. One of the best ways of achieving this is to use software. The important key however, is to know which software to use. It is also very important to use the software correctly.

I recommend the use of the free CCleaner – no it’s not a typo. And yes, it is very good even though the software is free.

You can obtain CCleaner here.

Make sure that you are careful when using the software. I do not suggest ticking every box available unless you know what you are doing. CCleaner does an excellent job of cleaning my system and is very simple to use. It does come with a registry optimization option, though I cannot comment on this part because I use a different product which I will detail later in this article.

I find that when just using the cleaning options of CCleaner, my computer runs much better. Try it for yourself.

Another program I use, which is not free, is Registry Mechanic.

Registry Mechanic will fix problems with your computer registry.

The computer registry is the deep brain of your computer. Care is therefore required. Using a program such as Registry Mechanic makes things much safer. Fiddling with the registry directly (without a special program) is not recommended unless you have a very good understanding of what you are doing. Ensuring that you have a backup of your computer or important data is also essential, just in case something goes wrong. This also applies to the use of CCLeaner’s more advanced functions.

Over the years I have used a wide variety of registry fix it type software, including many produced by commonly known market leaders such as Symantec. Registry Mechanic has done the best job by far. Some other programs have actually messed up my system – you have been warned!

Earlier this year, Registry Mechanic fixed a very serious problem which was causing a blue screen of death (BSOD). I am very grateful because had not been able to fix it, I would have lost enormous amounts of time. My investment in Registry Mechanic has therefore paid for itself many many times over.

The key, for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see, is to get the right software. Most software vendor pages contain various elements all designed to get you to purchase or use their product. Some of these elements can be very convincing. They do not mean however that you are making the best choice.

I use the two programs that I have discussed in this article having had a great deal of experience and conducted careful research.

Make sure that you backup your computer and/or your important data!

Yes, repeating it was very deliberate.
