Get out of your comfort zone and learn something different.
For some people this article may seem a bit ‘left field’, however by time you get to the end it should make a lot more sense for you.
Many of us go through life without learning much new; or if we do, it is related to our interests or career. I have been a big fan of learning more about how people tick – how people work. Besides being a deep interest, I realized a long time ago that deepening my understanding of people would help me in all areas of my life, as well as assist me in helping others.
One of the ways to learn key people stuff is to look in areas which are not obvious, preferably at the ‘cutting edge’. By cutting edge I mean areas where good thinking skills and understanding are critical – areas where there is a very low margin for error and where the stakes are higher than in normal everyday life. Usually, material prepared for such areas has a tendency to be higher quality and results driven. There really is no room for waffle, hot air or fancy theories. One such example is Police training. Police have to deal with a huge range of people, situations and stresses.
Many people who apply to US Police Departments to work as a Police Officer fail what is known as the Oral Board Interview.
I quote from some Police Oral Board training material:
“As a police recruiter, background investigator, and certified oral board rater with over 16 years of “hands-on” experience with oral board interviews, I regularly spend 10 hours a day sitting across the table from new police applicants just like you.
It’s my job to rate, grade and asses new police applicants to determine their suitability to be hired as police officers. I do this by asking some pretty tough questions…questions that give me insight into your honesty, integrity, and knowledge…as well as your judgment and reasoning abilities…all which are scored through several complex scenario type questions.
It’s true. Passing the oral board interview isn’t easy. And it’s likely to be one of the most nerve-racking things you’ll ever go through…
And…I can tell you firsthand that the biggest hurdle to you being hired as a police officer is the dreaded oral board interview.
In fact, the oral board interview eliminates more prospective police applicants than all other parts of the police testing process…combined! “
As you can see, the Police Oral Board training material contains some in depth psychology.
Everyone can learn a lot from this kind of material and besides the obvious potential Police recruits, it is useful for anyone planning to attend a job interview. On the other side of the coin, this kind of thing is excellent for developing human resources/job applicant assessment skills too.
People studying the Police Oral Board training material can use it to enhance:
- Relationships – personal, family, social, professional, work and client.
- How they deal with the authorities, and authority figures.
- How they deal with difficult people.
- How they deal with stressful and even dangerous situations or people.
- Job interviews for any position – as an applicant or interviewer.
The material only costs USD $29 and is available via instant download as an Adobe PDF file. To find out more click here.
I realize that some people resent the Police, and that sometimes they can have a justifiable grievance, however that is no reason not to learn from Police methods. The whole debate about Police power, Police States and so on is beyond the scope of this blog article, however I might add that in many places, including Australia; the Police overall do a lot of good for the community despite their jobs at times being very unpleasant and dangerous. Perhaps we should all consider that the Police are often victims themselves – not only of the thugs and other criminals, but sometimes of bureaucrats and politicians.
And in conclusion:
A society at war with its (ethical & legitimate) Police force will have to make friends with its criminals.
