Is playing computer games really the way to the top?
Computer games….
The term evokes different feelings, thoughts and emotions in people.
Some think computer games are bad and responsible for many ills in society. Others would rather not do anything else than play computer games (yes, they might be in a very bad way). Still others have a balanced view. Balance is key in many areas of life and this applies to consideration of computer games.
In fact, used correctly, computer games can actually be good for you!
And if the story I will discuss later in this blog post is to be believed, computer games can be very good for you indeed!
First, let me tell you about an article I wrote last year on my other blog:
Why the right computer game helps personal development.
Regular readers of this blog may also recall the article I wrote:
Playing video games ‘improves brainpower of older people’.
More recently I came across the somewhat shocking conclusion that it appears that surgeons who are ‘gamers’, or were ‘gamers’, are more likely to do a better job. That said, I expect one would get some strange looks if inquiries were made by patients about the computer gaming history of the surgeon prior to a procedure! I can just imagine some of the ‘snotty’ remarks that might be made by the medicos and their staff. So, where do I get this idea from?
Right here:
Play your way to the top
It might be an interesting exercise, after you have read the above article, to ask yourself how set in your ways you are. And how much this blog post has affected your previous viewpoint. Many of us have a natural tendency to try to label things, people and situations in set ways – this can lead to stifled thinking as we hang onto the stereotypes that we have ‘invested’ in. Are you a free thinker – open to new ways of looking at things? Willing to let go of your old outdated opinion? Or are you one of those so called ‘professional’ stuffed shirts?
And before I go…
…don’t forget to ask your General Practitioner (GP) BEFORE he/she operates on your ingrown toenail, whether or not he/she is a computer gamer. If he or she gets upset, then you can try to salvage the situation by saying you realize that life is simply a sexually transmitted terminal illness, that you want to get through life as pleasantly as possible and that you spend time reading blogs on the Internet which tell you stuff your Doctor never would.
